Velvet - The "IT" Fabric

The “IT” fabric of the moment in the world of interiors is definetely Velvet. While it has been a popular upholstery fabric of choice on sofas and chairs for years due to its durability, we are now seeing velvet items such as bedding, cushions and small furniture pieces like ottoman’s and small occasional chairs increasing in popularlity too.

This stunning textile has such a luxe look and feel to it and is a beautiful texture to include in any home from traditonal to modern. Velvet is really verstile, not to mention it has proven to be timeless. It has the ability to be casual but also formal depending on what you team it.

While jewel velvet colours of emerald green, mustard and navy are still going strong, the hues on offer this season are a real mix of light and dark. Strong colours like Aubergine, petrol blue, rust and charcoal grey are the newbies and are all striking colours, but do not fear if these are not your colours there is also a more soften palette of blush pinks, soft greys and dusky blues coming through too.

With the seasons changing now is a great time to freshen up your bedlinen ready for the winter months ahead. Consider a velvet look quilt or duvet and pillowcase or maybe a throw for instant luxe appeal. But be warned the look and feel of velvet will make it hard to get out of bed each morning.

If you love the feel of velvet but aren’t ready to committ to a new sofa then consider adding a throw cushion or two on your exisiting sofa. Another option is to incorporate a small ottoman or occassional chair in the living room which make for a nice update.

Just remember you don’t need to go overboard with velvet, by just adding an item to your home can make a substantial difference.
